“The Last Laugh,” is the second time we see the Joker in “Batman: the Animated Series.” He got out of Arkham off screen and has already established himself enough to create a giant trash heap that lets of laughing gas leading to him poisoning all of Gotham on April Fools day, including Alfred. The episode is standard Batman vs. Joker just on a large scale and only them (Robin doesn’t appear in this episode, just like he didn’t last episode).
Here is the assessment of the episode:
The Pros: The Joker – He poisons all of Gotham, Alfred and nearly drowns Batman. He is a good threat this episode, the only thing that got annoying were his constant quips. I know the series was going for the 60’s comic book feel, but there can be such thing as too many pun jokes. This is made up for by Captain Clown, one of his greater robotic minions who I would have loved to see face Bane or Killer Croc is Batman hadn’t destroyed him. The Joker also using all the tools in the trash compactor was brilliant too. It put his mind over Batman’s resourcefulness.
Alfred – Starts out with drawing Batman a bath on a piece of paper as a pun joke, and insane Alfred is sadly terrifying. Since he is always so put together.
Batman – Does a great job being contrasted with the Joker and is shown to have a sense of humor at the end that we don’t get to see very often. The episode does a great job showing that part of him.
The music – Some of the best music so far! The tension it creates is high and it adds to every seen making it greater than it would be…as good music in a movie or show should.
The Cons: April fools Pun Jokes – There were too many…and this is from a guy who likes to make puns.
It was a solid episode, not the best of Batman vs. the Joker, but good at establishing the Joker as a threat and his resourcefulness on a citywide scale. Also added dimension to the Alfred and Bruce Wayne relationship with the joking with one another. It was a good episode.
My ratings for this episode are 8.5 / 10.
